Getting Started

During onboarding, Dear walks you through adding your first few people one at a time, then lets you add more in a batch screen. After setup, tap the + button on the People tab to add someone new.

You can pick from your phone's contacts (Dear asks for permission first) or type a name manually. Dear only reads the name and photo during selection and stores it locally on your device.

So you can quickly select people by name instead of typing each one. Dear reads your contact names and photos once during selection, then stores them locally on your device. Dear never sends your contact data anywhere. There is no server.

You can deny contacts access and type names manually instead.

Each day at your chosen nudge time (set in Settings), Dear sends you a notification suggesting someone to reach out to. The suggestion is based on how long it's been since you last contacted them and the frequency you set.

Open the app to see your nudge card. Tap Text, Call, FaceTime, or WhatsApp to reach out. When you're done, tap Done to mark it complete.

Dear asks for notification permission during onboarding. If you skipped it, go to your iPhone's Settings > Notifications > Dear and enable notifications.

You can change your daily nudge time in Dear > Settings > Nudge Time.

You can set how often Dear reminds you about each person:

  • Weekly (every 7 days)
  • Every 2 Weeks (every 14 days)
  • Monthly (every 30 days)
  • Every 3 Months (every 90 days)
  • Every 6 Months (every 180 days)
  • Once a Year (every 365 days)

You can change someone's frequency anytime from their profile on the People tab.

Subscriptions and Purchases

The free version includes up to 10 people and 2 voice personas (Dear and Friendo, both trilingual in English, French, and Spanish). No time limit, no trial.

All three unlock unlimited people. The only difference is how you pay:

  • Monthly: $0.99/month
  • Annual: $5.99/year (save 50%)
  • Lifetime: $14.99 one-time (unlimited forever)

Voice personas are sold separately.

  • Individual voice: $0.99 each. Buy just the ones you want.
  • All Voices Bundle: $5.99 for all 13 premium voices.
  • Dear+ Everything: $29.99 for unlimited people + all voices + everything we build next.

If it still doesn't work, email us at support@dearnudges.com with your Apple receipt and we'll help sort it out.

No. Individual voices and the All Voices Bundle are one-time purchases. They're yours forever.

Note: Lifetime and Dear+ are available at introductory pricing during launch. Prices may increase in the future, but your purchase locks in your price forever.

Voices and Personas

Go to Dear > Settings and scroll to Your Voice. Tap any voice to select it. Your nudges will use that voice starting with your next nudge.

Dear and Friendo are free and work in English, French, and Spanish (they automatically match your device language).

Dear: "It's been a little while since you've reached out to Alex. A quick text could really make their day."
Friendo: "Yo, text Alex. It's been a minute. Actually it's been way more than a minute."

English voices ($0.99 each):

Sherlock: "The dust on your conversation with Alex tells me it's been at least a fortnight. Unacceptable."
Emily Brontë: "Whatever our souls are made of, yours and Alex's are the same. Write to them."
Dracula: "I have walked this earth for centuries, and still - the bonds between mortals move me. Text Alex."
Nonna: "Sweetheart, when's the last time you called Alex? They're going to think you don't love them."
Haiku: "One breath. One message. Alex. That is enough."
Noir: "The phone sat there, silent. Alex's name flickered in the contact list like a neon sign in the rain."
Mom Text: "Hi sweetie!! Just wondering if you've talked to Alex lately?? Love you!!"

French voices ($0.99 each):

Tu l'as apprivoisé. Envoie-lui un mot."

Spanish voices ($0.99 each):

Don Quijote: "Alma noble, Alex merece unas palabras suyas. No hace falta una gran gesta, basta un saludo sincero."
El Mar: "La corriente te acerca a Alex hoy. Deja que llegue."
La Abuela: "Mi vida, hace rato que no hablas con Alex. Un mensajito no cuesta nada, anda."

Dear and Friendo automatically match your device language. If your iPhone is set to French, they nudge you in French. Set to Spanish, they nudge in Spanish. All other voices stay in their native language (English, French, or Spanish).

Features

Go to Dear > Settings and switch from Messages to WhatsApp. When you tap "Text" on a nudge card, Dear will open WhatsApp instead of Messages. If WhatsApp isn't installed, Dear falls back to Messages automatically.

Long-press your home screen, tap the + button in the top corner, search for Dear, and choose a small or medium widget. The widget shows your current nudge and updates daily.

The Emily Brontë voice has a special dark widget design called "The Looking Glass."

You can choose 1, 2, or 3 nudges per day in Dear > Settings > Nudges Per Day. Each nudge suggests a different person to reach out to.

Privacy and Data

No. Dear has no server, no backend, no analytics, and no tracking. We do not know who you are, who your people are, or how you use the app. Everything stays on your device. Read our full privacy policy.

No. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, no passwords. You open the app and start using it.

No. When you tap Text, Call, or FaceTime, Dear hands you off to the relevant app (Messages, Phone, FaceTime, or WhatsApp). Dear cannot see your conversations, call logs, or any communication content.

Troubleshooting

Check these settings on your iPhone:

  • Settings > Notifications > Dear -- make sure notifications are enabled.
  • Settings > Focus -- if you use Focus modes, make sure Dear is allowed.
  • Dear > Settings > Notifications -- make sure the toggle is on.
  • Check your Nudge Time in Dear's settings. Notifications arrive at the time you set.

Go to your iPhone's Settings > Privacy & Security > Contacts > Dear and make sure access is enabled. If you previously denied access, you'll need to enable it here.

Go to Dear > Settings > Restore Purchases. Make sure you're signed into the same Apple ID used for the purchase and that you have an internet connection. If it still doesn't work, email us.
